Hydroelectric Generation & Distribution

1) Small Hydro:

Let’s keep in mind that the up-front investment in time and resources required to obtain project approvals can be a significant burden for small hydro developers. Licensing costs are largely the same regardless of the size of the installation. However, small projects bring in less revenue compared to projects that generate more power, making it more difficult for small project developers to absorb these costs.

The 10 steps of a Greenfield Small Hydro Project

  • Reconnaissance of the area to identify the projects
  • Identification of potential sites based on survey, already identified, on-going and completed projects
  • Acquisition fo data like hydrology, topology, geology, satellite imageries etc
  • Optimization of the area for power potential
  • Preparation of Detailed Project Report.
  • Integration of Social Aspects like Fisheries, Tourism, Drinking Water etc for sustainable development
  • Environmental Impact Assessment/ Environmental Management Plan studies
  • Obtaining all Statutory and non-statutory clearances
  • Land acquisition, power purchase agreement, state support agreement, implementation agreement
  • Equity and debt syndication.

2) Modernization

Hydropower is generating a clean, affordable electricity in DRC but it has yet to realize its full potential. Modernization projects upgrade turbines and other equipment, expanding the capacity and lifespan of existing hydropower facilities.

The process of upgrading hydropower facilities has already begun, with great success: on top of the amount quantity of electricity produced, it quickly generated jobs in local communities.

The selected projects will increase electric generation at a lower average cost per kWh. And the projects are not only low cost, they are environmentally friendly. Using the latest technologies to generate power also benefits wildlife, helping to preserve ecosystems and increase fish populations.
